Krabi after the Tsunami: Tonsai Beach

Special Report

Tonsai BeachTonsai Beach is the paradise of rock climbers and low-budget backpacking tourists. Most of the bungalows lie in the hinterland, rather far from the beach, so not many lives were lost here.

The wave had its highest impact in the southeastern part of the beach, in the area of Freedom Bar. Several structures were damaged or destroyed here. Most places are being rebuilt or have already finished repairs at the moment, while a few have ceased operations for this season, as it appears.

Overall, the beach looks tidy (even though Tonsai Beach can't be used for swimming anyway as it is too shallow and rocky). Like almost everywhere else, branches of trees or parts of longtail boats can still be seen in the forest, though. One bar has even integrated parts of destroyed longtail boats.

The main difference to "normal" life in Tonsai is the fact that Freedom Bar (which used to be the main party hangout here) is still closed and most parties now take place at Viking Bar. In fact, Tonsai seems to be the most crowded place in Krabi at the moment and boast a good atmosphere (even though it's still rather empty compared to normal times).

The rock climbing shops and Viking Scuba are back in business after having finished rebuilding their shops.
