Krabi after the Tsunami: Phra Nang Beach

Special Report

Phra Nang BeachPhra Nang Beach took a big hit from the wave, just like Railay Beach. The Rayavadee Premier Resort, which is the only hotel at this beach, suffered some damage and is still closed and under renovation. The wave seems to have swept right through the resort over to Railay East, because you can see small debris and sand everywhere on the footpath from Phra Nang Beach to Railay East. Damage can be seen at the Rayavadee's beach bar and the beachfront bungalows. Rayavadee Beach BarThe inland parts of the resort have not suffered hard, as far as can be seen from the footpath, except for the fact that the resort's garden looks damaged from sand and debris.

Due to the Rayavadee's closure, Phra Nang Beach itself looks pretty deserted, even though it is completely intact, except for the damage at the Rayavadee's bungalows. The good news is that you will hardly ever have the chance to find that much space for yourself at such a beautiful place.

Phra Nang BeachThe coral reefs around the beach are a different story. Since the wave was not stopped by anything before hitting the shore, the corals have taken quite a beating and have mostly been shattered. There is still lots of fish around, but I was unable to see any anemones.
