Krabi after the Tsunami: Ko Gai (Chicken Island)

Special Report

Ko Gai is famous not only for its chicken shape, but also for the picturesque sandbank connecting it to Ko Tub and Ko Mor islands. Bad news first: the sandbank has been washed away by the wave. Small sandbankOnly the sandbank between Ko Mor and Ko Tub is intact. Early reports are saying that nature is most likely going to rebuild the sandbank by itself due to the unique currents in this area, but it is still unknown how long it will take.

When I was snorkelling at Ko Gai, the main sandbank was still submerged by at least half a metre of water, while the small sandbank between Ko Mor and Ko Tub was already fully exposed.
Even so, Ko Gai is a good place to go sunbathing, especially since not many people go there at the moment.

CoralsAs far as the coral reefs are concerned, the snorkelling sites near the sandbank have clearly been affected. You see a lot of crushed coral on the ground of the sea, but yet a lot is still intact and many fish can be seen. Like in Phra Nang Beach, I failed to spot anemones.
